Sunflower Substation Technicians are an integral part of keeping the lights on for Kansans! Join our substation department where you will use your craftsmanship for maintenance and installations on high voltage electrical substations.
Do you like to take things apart and put them back together? Do you like puzzles? Are you intrigued by electricity? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this job might be for you! As a Substation Technician Apprentice for Sunflower Electric Power Corporation in Dodge City or Garden City, KS, you will get the opportunity to work on transformers and other mechanical and electrical components of transmission substations. Enjoy traveling our service territory as you assist with the inspection, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of electric transmission and distribution substation equipment including power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and various electrical and electronic systems with most duties involving working with circuits between 48 and 600 volts.

Qualifications:
Apprentice Level: Two year post high school technical certification in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Journey Level: An additional four years electric utility substation experience with increasingly responsible duties related to installation/maintenance of substation equipment is required. Completion of a recognized substation apprenticeship program is preferred.
Placement in the position will be based upon the level of competencies possessed.

EEI Testing:
We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies. We strongly encourage candidates to review all the information, including the sample test brochures, and to use the available practice tests before taking the actual tests, available here:

The username and password are both sunflower. Practice tests provide sample questions and detailed discussions of the correct answers. It’s important to take the practice test as you would the actual one, with similar intensity and concentration. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.

Qualifications:
One year of post high school education in a science field and two years practical water treatment equipment and analytical testing methods experience in an industrial environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of laboratory testing and analytical processes and procedures.
Successful completion of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) Test.
