Job Duty Description:   

This is highly skilled work in the installation, maintenance, repair and operation of the physical plant and grounds of the Norton Correctional Facility and supervision of an organizational unit of skilled and semi-skilled inmate workers.  Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the work of skilled and semi-skilled inmates in the installation or repair of the facility electrical system, construction, maintenance and repair activities in the institution.

This position has a trade’s differential of $0.30 per hour and an inmate supervision differential pay of 10% of the wage in addition to the base pay.

Minimum Qualifications:  Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades.  Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Performance Standards:  Knowledge of the standard practices in the building trades; plumbing; carpentry; electrical; masonry; painting; welding; sheet metal; refrigeration and air conditioning, and mechanical trades. Knowledge of the practices, tools, equipment, and materials associated with a variety of crafts involved in renovation/remodeling projects.  Detailed knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of specific crafts or trades.  Detailed knowledge of ADA regulations and code requirements.  Ability to read, interpret, and works from sketches, blueprints, and specifications and to evaluate, analyze, and resolve construction and mechanical problems.  Ability to understand and execute all aspects of remodeling projects.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions.  Ability to keep careful and thorough records.  Ability to make estimates of time and materials.  Advanced skill in the use and operation of tools, machines and equipment commonly used in remodeling and new construction and repair work at the highly specialized level.

Selection Process:  Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions, and possibly a performance or written test. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval.  A second interview may be conducted.  Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency.
