NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

Nicodemus National Historic Site

510 Washington Avenue

Nicodemus , Kansas   67625

  April 14, 2008

Nicodemus National Historic Site asks that you post the following summer jobs and notify possible candidates of this upcoming opportunity.  We are now accepting applications for full-time, temporary (seasonal) positions—a Park Guide and a Maintenance Worker to work at Nicodemus National Historic Site, located in Nicodemus, Kansas.

We will accept applications for this position until May 15 2008.  Candidates must be 18 years old or older and must be continuing with their college education in the fall of 2008 (a copy of their course list for fall enrollment is sufficient proof of continuing education).

A job announcement for this position is attached for your distribution or posting.  Information on submitting a federal job application is also included.

Nicodemus National Historic Site helps preserve, protect, and interpret Nicodemus , Kansas – the only remaining of the all-Black town established along the Western frontier at the end of the Reconstruction period (1877).  The town of Nicodemus illustrates how African Americans participated in the western expansion of the United States and the settlement of the Great Plains .  Nicodemus National Historic Site is one of 388 National Parks.  We lease the historic (1929) Nicodemus Township Hall for use as a visitor center; the visitor center is open to the public seven days a week, from 8:30am to 5:00pm every day.  The successful candidate will be working during the town’s big event of the summer—the Homecoming/Emancipation Celebration—during the last weekend of July.  Approximately 500-1,000 people attend this event each year.

Please encourage your students to take advantage of this opportunity to see what it is like to work for the Federal government, at a very interesting historic location.  Thank you very much for your assistance in promoting this position!

Sincerely,

Mark Weaver, Acting Superintendent
