Job Description: Serves as Officer-in-Charge of a cellhouse, dormitory, or a living unit annex; supervision of subordinate Correctional Officers and/or inmates; assigned to work on any shift or post which may change in accordance with needs of the facility. Ensures that ordered, disciplined, secure, sanitary, and safe conditions are established and maintained. Engages in or supervises the taking and reporting of periodic counts of inmates to ensure that all are present and accounted for. Shakes down (or supervises the shakedown of) inmates and conducts (or supervises) searches in order to prevent and control secretion of contraband. Supervises daily inmate activity schedules. Works to modify for improvement antisocial attitudes in inmates; serves as a positive role model through skillful communication, maintaining a neat and well-groomed appearance, and by consistently presenting a high level of deportment. Advises, counsels, and otherwise assists security personnel with occupational and/or personal problems, referring the individual when necessary to the appropriate department for further assistance. Attempts to resolve grievances and/or provides information to the employee on the procedures to follow for filing a formal grievance. Conducts briefing for all new inmates assigned to a cellhouse, dormitory, or living unit annex and provides them with information on the policies and procedures to be following while assigned to that unit; provides inmates their living assignment. Prepares Workers’ Compensation reports for work-related injuries of subordinates, Incident Reports, Disciplinary Reports, recurring and inmate progress reports in accordance with State regulations, Kansas Department of Corrections Internal Management Policies and Procedures (IMPPs), Ellsworth Correctional Facility General Orders, Warden’s memoranda, and orders of direct supervisors. Responds to emergency situations in accordance with appropriate emergency plans.
Minimum Requirements: Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for Corrections Officer IA; be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment; have two years of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders; and have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). At the discretion of the agency, relevant college coursework or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required COTP.
Preferred Skills: Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinate personnel. Knowledge of procedures and practices of supervising offenders confined in an adult maximum correctional facility; and ability to use physical force as warranted to subdue violent inmates.
Performance Standards: Strong problem solving skills; good oral and written communication skills; effective conflict management skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and effective customer service skills; ability to adapt to new situations and/or changes. The incumbent must be capable of performing established Essential Physical Functions. An initial 6-month probationary period is required for new or promoted employees.
