Under the general supervision of the Building and Zoning Supervisor, the City Planner organizes, coordinates and administers planning programs and activities which include Historic Preservation and City Planning. This position will attend Board and Commission meetings, serving as the recording secretary; facilitating and coordinating of sub-committees or work groups formed out of the Preservation and Planning Commissions. Position is responsible for preparing agendas and minutes for the Planning Commission; Historic Preservation Commission. Incumbent will make presentations at public meetings. This position will support the City Engineering, Zoning, and Building Administration activities and staff; and will prepare annual reports as needed for the Public Works Director. This position will be responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of the public works website.
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; major emphasis in City Planning, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Engineering or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum of five (5) years’ work experience in government, municipal government, and/or related agencies preferred, with general knowledge of city planning, zoning, engineering, land development, and historic preservation. Employee in this position is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
Skills: Ability to coordinate, organize and negotiate; Ability to attend and staff Planning and Historic Preservation Commission, and other meetings outside of regular working hours; Ability to exercise good judgement in evaluation situations and making decisions; Excellent research, analysis and writing skills; Ability to analyze and resolve complex and sensitive problems; Flexibility to handle diverse issues with different completion schedules; Excellent human relation skills with the ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, elected officials, department heads, and other employees of the City and the media.
