Full-Time Apprentice/Journeyman Lineman
Wheatland Electric is looking for a person to fill our Apprentice/Journeyman Lineman position in our Leoti office. This is a full-time position. The job description follows.
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Journeyman Lineman are responsible for building, maintaining, removing, and repairing overhead and underground power distribution lines within the scope of her/her training and certification in a safe and efficient manner under the direction of the Foreman.
MINIMUM JOB SPECIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent. Must pass an approved four (4) year apprenticeship program or equivalent; shall be capable of doing all types of line work in accordance with the Company’s established construction standards and practices. Must have (or be able to obtain before employment) a valid Class A CDL License and CDL physical for operating commercial vehicles. Must be able to maintain the Class A CDL and CDL physical while employed with Wheatland Electric. Must be able to complete OSHA requirements that are outlined for journeyman lineman, including CPR and First Aid training. Must be capable of performing pole-top rescue. Requires basic technical utility knowledge skills, and abilities to perform transformer hookups, proper meter connections, set poles, and operate heavy equipment, tools, and machinery. Ability to effectively read and follow operations and safety manuals. Must have basic computer skills. Must be able to pass a physical and required to successfully pass Wheatland Electric’s drug screening, pre-employment and ongoing. Must be able to perform essential job functions. Must reside within or be willing to relocate to the service area they serve.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This classification almost always works outside and requires the physical ability to lift and move objects, also to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to work outside, in weather and temperature extremes, for extended periods of time. Physical tasks include standing, walking, climbing, bending, crouching, twisting, pushing-pulling, carrying, reaching above, lifting-lowering 1-50 lbs., working at heights, pole climbing. Repetitive motion of hand-wrist, elbow, rubber gloving with rubber sleeves. These physical tasks must be able to be performed as needed for a normal working day and for extended periods of time when customers are out of power or in times of emergency. These extended periods may include nights, weekends, or holidays. Some travel may be required including overnight.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: The Journeyman Lineman works under the direction of the District Manager/Director of Operations, the supervision and direction of the Area Wide Supervisor and Foreman, with other serviceman, journeyman and apprentices. They receive service orders from Consumer Service Representatives. They resolve emergency/hazardous conditions and resolves consumer trouble calls.
BASIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The following are essential responsibilities of this position and do not include marginal functions that are incidental to the performance of the fundamental job duties.
a) Use journeyman-level knowledge of overhead and underground line construction
and maintenance to safely construct and maintain electric distribution lines.
1. Have a working knowledge of overhead and underground devices such as, but not
limited to, transformers, meters, capacitors, voltage regulators, switching cabinets,
capacitors, fuses, breakers and oil circuit reclosers.
2. Have a working knowledge of safe working practices for construction and
maintenance of overhead and underground electric lines.
3. Have a working knowledge of safe switching procedures for transmission,
distribution (overhead and underground) electric lines including switching as
required in substations.
4. Must be capable of rubber gloving energized electric distribution lines.
5. Must possess good math and reasoning abilities as required for the job.
b) Performs duties associated with restoration of electric service.
c) Operate equipment such as digger trucks, aerial lifting trucks, forklifts, etc.
d) Climbs poles of all types and performs jobs required of linemen off the poles,
including changing out of arms, transformers, conductors, etc.
e) Must have a general and specific journeyman knowledge of equipment and operate
equipment in order to construct and maintain electrical systems both cold and
energized (hot) lines.
f) Drives and operates bucket truck, digger, trencher, forklift, and skid loader to
frame and set poles, lay wire, tie wire, connect and disconnect services, and tree
g) Inspects existing power lines looking for problems, trouble shoots problems, and
retires old power lines as required.
h) Responds to power outages and customer problems and trouble shoots to restore
power in a timely manner.
i) Directs, guides and trains personnel in lower level apprenticeship programs or
equivalent. All training shall contain emphasis on safe working practices.
j) Maintains current knowledge of equipment, RUS specifications, OSHA regulations,
mapping system, and other operational and regulatory systems related to the
responsibilities of the position.
k) Promotes electric use by taking every opportunity to acquaint the consumers with
the productive uses of electricity; obtaining increased member and public
understanding of the Cooperative’s objectives, plans and programs, and of rural e
electrification in general.
l) Acts as backup for working foreman or serviceman, as needed

n) Maintains assigned equipment, tools, and material in a clean, safe and efficient

brush control and wood preservation.
p) Performs other duties as assigned.
