Job Duty Description: This is specialized, professional work planning, organizing and carrying out habilitation, rehabilitation, or socialization activities with inmates. Work involves the application of specialized activity skills in music, art, horticultural, athletic or recreational program in a correctional facility.

Minimum Qualifications:  Four years of experience in recreation, athletics, music, or art. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Performance Standards:   Plans and carries out habilitative or rehabilitative, educational, vocational, athletic, religious, or social activities utilizing modalities which include recreation, sports/athletics, or expressive arts (art, music, dance); assists an Activity Specialist II in planning and carrying out specialized or facility-wide activities.  Conducts and interprets activity assessments to determine needs, assets, capabilities, and interests; evaluates and documents participant acceptance and progress in activities; demonstrates activities and encourage inmates to participate.  Develops and implements activities designed to facilitate positive behavioral changes and social skills, and to assist individuals in developing acceptable means to conflict resolution.  Monitors and maintains activity supplies and equipment; maintains inventory records; completes purchase requests and work orders; assists in budget planning.

Preferred Requirements:  Knowledge of the methods and techniques of music, art, athletic or recreational activities. Ability to direct and instruct groups and individuals participating in structured activities. Ability to observe, recall and document behavior, surroundings and events. Ability to recognize and report behaviors in individuals that impede program progress or threaten security. Ability to supervise and control adult offenders individually and in groups. Ability to communicate information concisely and accurately in verbal or written form.

Selection Process:  Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions, and possibly a performance or written test. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval.  A second interview may be conducted.  Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency.

Veteran Preference Eligible (VPE):  This position is eligible for veterans’ preference.  Interested veterans must submit a DD 214 to the Department of Administration to be verified as a veteran under K.S.A. 73-201 prior to the vacancy close date.  Verified veterans who meet the selection criteria for this position will be invited for an interview.
